How does STEER's Magic Link Work?

🎉 From Summer 2026, for one week after being sent, the link in the STEER student login emails will let students log in without needing to enter their username and password! 

This will save valuable time during assessments, helping students get going as quickly and painlessly as possible. It will also make the teacher's life that little bit easier.

 

However there are a few things to know:

The magic link will be active for one week after sending

After that, it will take students to the login page, just like normal. The email will still include the username and password, so students won't even notice the difference and can login just like before.

Why is it limited to one week?

This is for security reasons. Links which do not expire can be a risk to hackers. 

What happens after the link expires?

Nothing! Students will just be taken to the the login page, like they would normally. The email itself hasn't changed at all, so your students will still have their username and password in case they need it. There won't be any error messages or anything like that, so they won't even know the difference.

You don't need to do anything different

It is automatically activated so you can just send the standard login email. There is no action required.

If you want to ensure that students will be able to login password free, then you can plan to send the emails less than a week before, but it is not essential.
