Repeating the same assessment up to three times a year, year on year can understandably lead to assessment fatigue, particularly amongst older students.
Here are 3 different ways to engage older students.
- Make sure from the very start that students understand that they’re investing in an asset that’ll be of value to them in the future. There are a couple of ways to explain this. You might say, “Just like regularly putting money in your savings account, each STEER assessment round puts a deposit into your personal story that’ll help you understand yourself better when you are given it in Year 11.” Or, “It's a bit like school taking a photo of you each term, putting the photos in an album, and giving it to you in Year 11 so you can see how you’ve changed over time.” Remember, Take the Wheel is a fantastic STEER resource that makes sharing STEER data easy and fun.
- Draw on peer power. Teachers tell us that their Y11 students are fascinated by what Take the Wheel shows them. They are amazed to see how the simple STEER questions can tap into what was happening in their lives over previous years. It often leads to powerful conversations between students and their teachers. Harness this engagement by asking older students to share their STEER experiences with their younger peers.
- Explain that STEER data is your eyes and ears. "As a teacher, I know that I can't see and hear everything that goes on in school; I'm not superhuman. When you complete the STEER assessment, your responses help me understand you better, so I can make sure I give each of you the right support at the right time!"
