From 2026, you will. be able to add custom filters to STEER Tracking.
This is being added been added primarily to help schools comply with the new OFTED requirements to track vulnerable groups.
Using STEER to demonstrate your focus on improving the mental health and wellbeing of vulnerable groups is highly effective. As every school has different groups which they need to track, allowing custom data fields empowers schools to make their own decisions.
How does it work?
We've created two new fields named:
- Custom 1
- Custom 2
You can populate these with the data types your school needs. Examples could include:
- Young Carers
- English second language
- Students in an intervention group
- Etc
However, it is extremely important that you only add data to STEER which has a justification and is in line with your school's Data Protection Policy.
Data protection considerations
- Customers should be mindful of necessity and proportionality under the UK GDPR for any/all additional or custom data fields they select to be included for STEER and only include those where use of additional data fields across the cohort can be justified.
- You need to think carefully about who should have permission to see this new data, particularly if it is sensitive. It is important to understand that if a member of staff has access to a student, then they have access to all of their data fields. For example, if a teacher has permission to see their tutor group, then they will be able see which of their students fall into the custom categories you have added. So if you chose to use your custom field for young carers, then tutors will know which of their students are young carers. In most schools, this is standard, however, you need to make sure you comply with your school's policies.
- When adding new data fields to the platform, the school’s DPIA [Data Protection Impact Assessment] should be updated accordingly.
- The parent and/or student privacy notice should be amended to incorporate any additional data sharing as necessary.
- Additionally, where required, this processing should be recorded in the Appropriate Policy Document in accordance with Schedule 1 of the DPA 2018.
How to add custom fields
Add the new data
Because this data is fully flexible, it is not connected to Wonde and must be imported using a CSV. However, this is really easy using our 'Add extra data via CSV' tool.
Admin --> Data Management --> Students --> Add Extra data via CSV
Just follow the instructions on the page.
