When writing an action plan it’s tempting to fast forward to choosing an action. The STEER student action planning process asks teachers to take a moment to reflect on both the past causes and the future risks before selecting an action.
First, they look back at the student's story
The cause prompts help teachers recall information, observations, conversations or interactions that help them better understand why a student may have developed
When teachers understand a student's story, it changes their perspective. They may see and understand their student differently, shaping every interaction going forward.
Second, they look ahead and anticipate their risks
Whilst a student may not show any immediate risks, continuing to steer as they are, increases their future risks. The risk prompts help teacher act earlier to identify and reduce those risks.
When teachers anticipate risks, they are more precise, purposeful and proactive in choosing the right signpost for this student.
