Typically, in a class of 30, you may see 3-5 students flagged as Priority Students [ 2 or more Polar Biases]. You may have other students who are flagged with Composite Biases. But you do not need to write action plans for every flagged student. Use your judgement.
For example
- Some students may already be benefiting from a small group intervention. Rather than double up on your provision, log the intervention as a monitor comment.
- Some flagged students may already be referred to a counsellor or therapist. Remember STEER is an early intervention tool, alerting you to students who are not yet on your radar. Again, simply note that they are already receiving support.
Having focused on those flagged students currently under the radar, or not yet receiving support, it is likely that a teacher, responsible for 30 students may write 3 action plans after each round, each taking around 10 mins to write.
If you have a very high number of students who are flagged, but not currently receiving support, consider
- writing a Group Action Plan for students who share the same factor or composite bias.
- talking to your STEER Lead or Senior Practitioner. Your students' STEER data is a measurable indication of the demands upon you. It’s important that you’re sufficiently resourced and supported to meet the needs of your students
