The first time you import students, you need to do it manually. From then on, we'll sync all your student data automatically! Find out how that works here.
✅ Things that need to be done first:
- Inform us that you want to use Wonde. If you are a new school, we will have asked you about this in your IT Starter Survey. We need to let Wonde know so that we get everything ready for you to sync.
- Set your Wonde Permissions. It's important to only share the data types which you actually want to add to STEER. Wonde let's you choose this using their permissions page- how this works.
After that, you're ready to sync!
1️⃣ Getting Stared
If you are a new school, you'll see our set-up wizard as soon as you log in, simply click "Import Students" to get started!
If you're an existing school which needs to do a first time Wonde import, then you can find it on the "Data Management" on "Admin" (at the bottom of the sidebar).
Choose "Wonde" when asked how you would like to import!
If that button is blocked, it means that STEER isn't aware that your school actually plans on using Wonde. Let us know on Zendesk and we'll get it set up.
2️⃣ Choose which year groups you want to import
Choose all the year groups that you are planning to track! We'll only import data for students in these years.
If you are extremely data privacy conscious, you can set this from Wonde's own interface. However, it needs to be manually reset every year and isn't the most intuitive process. If you take that approach, you'll need to carefully manage it in future.
3️⃣ Choosing your import settings
Here, you can customise your school's experience to choose what suits you. You can make three choices:
Do you want students to login using emails or generated usernames?
You can still import emails, even if you don't use them as logins. This is useful because you can easily distribute login details ahead of assessments.
If you don't want to import email at all (or your students don't have them) then select Platform Generated and untick the box "Import email to easily distribute logins".
What type of passwords do you want?
We offer numeric (all numbers) and alphanumeric (numbers and letters). Obviously alphanumeric is more secure, but can be more challenging to type (especially younger students).
Which type of houses (if any) would you like to import?
Some MIS have two available houses, one "Boarding House" and one "Academic House". If you're school isn't a boarding school, then just choose Academic house.
4️⃣ Start the sync
This normally takes a few minutes (10 maximum).
5️⃣ Review the imported data
Tips to review your import:
- Are there any errors? At this stage, we'll alert you to any errors that we have spotted (list of common errors). Having errors doesn't necessarily mean that you can't complete the import, we're just informing you of them, so that you can resolve them if needed.
- Do the totals of new and updated students look accurate? You can compare them to your MIS to see if they match you expectations. Note that we'll ignore any students who aren't being imported due to an error.
- If you want to be extra careful or clear up a doubt, you can click "View Data". That will let you look at all the new students. This can be useful if you are worried about the wrong houses or emails being imported. However, don't be confused if the data looks a bit odd (underscores etc)- this page shows the raw data as it arrives from Wonde.
If that's all good, then you can finalise the import!
From then on, we'll sync your data automatically once a week (including at the start of the year). In usual circumstances, you won't need to do a manual import ever again.
