STEER data isn’t ordinarily shared with parents for three important reasons.
1. Teachers are trained to interpret their students' STEER data through an accredited online training programme and further Action Plan training meetings were interpretation is modelled and scaffolded by a STEER Success Manager. Without the same quality of training, parents may jump to conclusions or make erroneous assumptions. For example, they may feel their child is being profiled, labelled, or their parenting judged.
2. The STEER platform shows teachers each student's data in context. Firstly in relation to their peers, and secondly to their own historical data. Both contexts are important when evaluating risk. Exporting and sharing student STEER data with parents without context would be unwise.
3. Whilst teachers understand STEER as a proactive, preventative tool that identifies early indicators of future social, emotional and learning risks, parents may assume those risks are current. You may needlessly alarm parents.
However, we know that when teachers and parents work together, it has a positive impact on student outcomes. Click on the link below to find out how STEER data can guide and resource teachers to have the right conversation with the right parent at the right time.
